Piece de Resistance: The Wishbone Chair

Chances are, if I am drawn to a specific piece of furniture in a room it is most likely a Scandinavian design.  Our Room of the Week is no different…I love the dining chairs, the iconic Wishbone Chair by Hans Wegner.

I love this little snippet about the chair from Wikipedia:

“In 1944 Wegner began a series of chairs inspired by a portrait of Danish merchants sitting in traditional Ming chairs. The Wishbone chair is the last and most distinct of the series. The inspiration is clearly visible, but the chair is an original form. The back legs are steam-bent into a curve that tapers to join a circular steam-bent back rail. The joinery was difficult but resulted in a strong, lightweight chair.”

Years ago I spotted a listing for 6 vintage wishbone chairs on Craigslist in San Diego.  I passed them up, and have regretted it (and dreamed about them)ever since.  Luckily, both vintage and reproduction chairs are widely available today.
