Piece de Resistance: A Colorful Kitchen Island

The bright green kitchen island in the Room of the Week is definitely the piece de resistance.  It makes a huge statement because of its size and color, and provides the homeowners with plenty of storage, prep space and personality.

Here are a few things to consider when you’re making a statement this big:

  • It’s fairly difficult to change the color of an island (if not impossible in some cases), so it’s probably best you pick your very favorite color, or at the very least one you like to look at in large doses every single day.
  • Think about how the color will look in the light throughout the day.  If you like to unwind in your kitchen in the evening, bright orange might not be the best option.  Or, on the other hand, if you really like to spend time in your kitchen starting your day orange could be perfect.
  • You might consider just painting/staining/lacquering part of the island, and mixing in other materials, so the color isn’t so overwhelming.
  • Consider using a tint (color with white added…here’s a little refresher on tints), so it’s a softer version of your favorite color.

There are beautiful examples in every color you can imagine…
